Company report
Summary of Results
Absolute results are low overall and Buenaventura’s results are mostly limited to its formal commitments to prevent bribery and corruption, and ensure safe and healthy working conditions. Buenaventura shows one of the stronger results on systematic engagement with worker representatives in tracking the company’s performance on health and safety and designing and monitoring actions to improve health and safety.
At the same time, Buenaventura ranks 19th among the 38 companies on mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 11% in the mine-site assessment.
Buenaventura’s results in the company-wide assessment are below the average across all 38 companies in all six thematic areas. The company’s overall results are limited, for example, by a lack of evidence of formal commitments on human rights or a lifecycle approach. In addition, the company shows no evidence of systematic action on a number of key issues, such as conducting human rights due diligence, assessing or addressing the risks of child labour or forced labour in its operations and supply chains, or ensuring its operations respect the rights of potentially affected Indigenous Peoples. Likewise, the company shows no evidence of tracking or reviewing its performance on a number of issues including its measures to prevent bribery and corruption and its efforts to ensure gender balance on its Board and in its senior management.
Moreover, the overall results of three of the five Buenaventura mine sites assessed in the mine-site assessment are strikingly weak. These three mine sites show no relevant evidence on nine of the ten issues: local employment, local procurement, post-closure planning, community grievances, air quality, water quality and quantity, tailings management and emergency preparedness.
