Company report
Summary of Results
Absolute results remain low overall and NMDC’s results are largely dependent on the commitments it has made: on preventing bribery and corruption, ensuring safe and healthy working conditions, and systematically managing its environmental impacts.
NMDC ranks 19th among the 38 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 11%.
In the company-wide assessment, NMDC’s overall results are below the average across all 38 companies in all six thematic areas, and the company’s results are limited by a lack of evidence of action on some key issues, including human rights. While the company mentions its commitment to respecting human rights (though shows no evidence of a formal, endorsed commitment on this), there is no evidence of it conducting any human rights due diligence processes, or assessing and addressing the risks of child labour or forced labour in its operations and supply chains. Likewise, there is no evidence of NMDC planning for the management of post-closure transition for workers and affected communities, assessing and addressing any adverse impacts on land use and land access by affected communities, or disclosing information on the location and safety of its tailings storage facilities.
Moreover, the results of two of the five NMDC mine sites are strikingly weak. Neither of these mine sites show any relevant evidence on six of the ten issues covered: local employment, post-closure planning, community grievances, worker grievances, tailings management and emergency preparedness.
