Company report
Summary of Results
While absolute results remain low overall, Newcrest Mining shows one of the five stronger results in Lifecycle Management and its results are above the overall average for five thematic areas, but below average in Working Conditions (largely due to some lack of detail in its disclosure of data on fatalities, serious injuries and safety incidents). In Lifecycle Management, Newcrest Mining has a mine closure standard designed to ensure its operations manage post-closure transition for affected communities, and demonstrates that it tracks and reviews its performance on progressive rehabilitation.
Newcrest Mining ranks 6th among the 38 companies on its mine-site-level results, though with an average score of only 20%, in the mine-site assessment.
In evidence of Newcrest Mining’s continuous improvement efforts since the RMI Report 2018, the company has produced a new biodiversity policy that formalises its no-go commitment on World Heritage Sites and its respect for other protected areas. Furthermore, the company has produced a climate change statement, set a target for reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and started detailed and site-disaggregated reporting on its GHG emissions.
Newcrest Mining is associated with a leading practice on disclosure of details on the functioning and uptake of its community grievance mechanism at one of its mine sites.
Newcrest Mining’s overall results are limited by a lack of evidence on a number of issues, including for example tracking the quality of its relationships with affected communities, ensuring its operations address the health and safety needs of women workers, and tracking its performance on reducing adverse impacts on water quality.
Moreover, Newcrest Mining’s results in the mine-site assessment are very variable. While one of its four assessed mine sites shows the strongest results among the 180 sites assessed (scoring 52%), the company’s other three mine sites results are much weaker. None of these three mine sites show any relevant evidence on six of the issues covered: post-closure planning, community grievances, worker grievances, air quality, water quality and emergency preparedness.
