Company report
Summary of Results
While absolute results remain low overall, CODELCO shows one of the three stronger results in Working Conditions, in part as the company has a corporate system designed to address the health and safety needs of women workers, as well as guidelines on preventing sexual harassment of women workers. The company also shows evidence of systematic engagement with worker representatives in tracking the company’s performance on health and safety and designing and monitoring actions to improve health and safety.
CODELCO ranks 12th among the 38 companies on its mine-site-level results, though with an average score of only 17% in the mine-site assessment.
In the company-wide assessment, CODELCO shows relatively stronger results on the issue of emergency response planning. The company has a corporate standard designed to ensure its operations develop such plans and engage with local communities in the design and testing of these plans.
In a sign of its continuous improvement efforts since the RMI Report 2018, CODELCO recently made a formal commitment to respect human rights, in line with the UN Guiding Principles.
CODELCO is associated with several leading practices, including its corporate guidelines to prevent gender-based violence, harassment and discrimination, promote women workers’ careers, enable safe working conditions for women and promote healthy family life.
On the other hand, CODELCO’s results are below the average across all 38 companies in two thematic areas: Economic Development and Community Wellbeing. And CODELCO’s overall results are limited by a lack of evidence of action on, for example, ensuring gender balance on its Board and in its senior management, supporting procurement from national suppliers, and tracking and reviewing its performance on progressive rehabilitation. In addition, the company has yet to show evidence of tracking its performance on managing human rights issues.
Moreover, none of the six CODELCO mine sites assessed show any relevant evidence for four of the issues covered in the mine-site assessment: disclosure of numbers of local people employed, disclosure of local procurement spend, disclosure of water quality data, and an approach to emergency preparedness that informing affected communities about the emergency response plans and involving these communities in the testing of these plans.
