Company report
Summary of Results
Absolute results remain low overall and MMG’s results are largely dependent on the formal commitments it has made: to prevent bribery and corruption, to follow a lifecycle approach, and to ensure safe and healthy working conditions. In contrast, the company’s environmental policy remains relatively weak, with no integration of the mitigation hierarchy approach to prioritise the prevention and avoidance of impacts above measures to minimise, restore or offset the residual impacts.
MMG ranks 10th among the 38 companies on its mine-site-level results, though with an average score of only 18% in the mine-site assessment.
In the company-wide assessment, MMG’s results are above the overall average for four thematic areas, but below average in both Economic Development and Lifecycle Management.
In evidence of MMG’s continuous improvement efforts since the RMI Report 2018, the company has strengthened its position on human rights by creating a formal Sustainable Development Framework and a dedicated commitment statement on human rights, that together align with the UN Guiding Principles and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. In addition, the company has enhanced its consideration of the impacts of involuntary displacement, by revising and expanding its social performance standard to now require operations to assess and address these impacts, in consultation with project-affected people.
MMG’s overall results are limited by a lack of evidence on several issues. For example, the company shows no evidence of efforts to ensure gender balance on its Board and in its senior management or to protect women workers from harassment and violence. Furthermore, MMG shows little evidence of tracking its performance on managing human rights issues.
None of the four MMG mine sites included in the mine-site assessment show any relevant evidence on three of the issues covered: worker grievances, air quality and water quality.
