Absolute results are low overall and Sibanye-Stillwater’s results in general rely in part on its formal commitments, to prevent bribery and corruption and ensure safe and healthy working conditions, and its disclosure of information on the location and safety of its tailings storage facilities along with other companies, following the recent investor request.

Sibanye-Stillwater ranks 28th among the 38 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 3% in the mine-site assessment.

In the company-wide assessment, Sibanye-Stillwater’s results are below the average across all 38 companies in all six thematic areas. Sibanye-Stillwater’s overall results are limited by a lack of evidence of action on a number of key issues, including human rights. While the company has made a commitment to respect human rights, it shows no evidence of having conducted any human rights due diligence processes, or tracking its performance on managing human rights issues. On other matters, Sibanye-Stillwater shows no evidence of disclosing the payments it makes to sub-national and national governments, and has not made a public commitment to follow a lifecycle approach throughout the project development and operational phases of its operations.

Sibanye-Stillwater is associated with a leading practice on disclosure of data on its Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.

However, the results of the five Sibanye-Stillwater mine sites assessed in the mine-site assessment are strikingly weak. None of these mine sites show any relevant evidence on eight of the ten issues covered: local employment, local procurement, post-closure planning, community grievances, worker grievances, air quality, water quality and emergency preparedness.
