Company report
Summary of Results
Absolute results are low overall and First Quantum Minerals’ results are largely dependent on the formal commitments it has made: to prevent bribery and corruption, respect human rights, ensure safe and healthy working conditions, and manage its environmental impacts systematically. However, the company’s environmental management commitment does not incorporate the mitigation hierarchy approach of prioritising prevention and avoidance of impacts above measures to minimise, restore or offset the residual impacts. In its company-wide results, First Quantum Minerals’ results also stem in part from its disclosure of the payments it makes to subnational and national governments, in accordance with Canada’s Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act.
First Quantum Minerals ranks 25th among the 38 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 5% in the mine-site assessment.
First Quantum Minerals’ overall results in the company-wide assessment is below the average achieved across all 38 companies in all six thematic areas, and the company’s results are limited by a lack of evidence of systematic action on issues such as addressing the health and safety needs of women workers, tracking the quality of its relationships with affected communities, and basing its recruitment and employment practices on equal opportunity.
Moreover, the overall results of the five First Quantum Minerals mine sites included in the mine-site assessment are strikingly weak. None of these mine sites show any relevant evidence on six of the ten issues covered in the mine-site assessment: local employment, community grievances, worker grievances, air quality, water quality and quantity, and tailings management.
