Company report
Summary of Results
While absolute results remain low overall, Teck shows one of the three stronger results in Lifecycle Management and one of the five stronger results in Business Conduct and Environmental Responsibility.
In the mine-site assessment Teck ranks 1st among the 38 companies on its mine-site-level results, though with an average score of only 28%.
In Lifecycle Management, Teck shows evidence of having systems in place designed to ensure its operations’ closure planning seeks continued livelihood viability for affected communities as well as having made a formal commitment to adopt a lifecycle approach. The company has made formal commitments on a wide range of other issues, including: preventing bribery and corruption, respecting human rights, ensuring safe and healthy working conditions, managing its environmental impacts systematically, and not exploring or mining in World Heritage Sites and respecting other protected areas.
Teck is associated with several leading practices, including a collaborative approach by one of its operations to support basic education in surrounding districts.
As evidence of Teck’s continuous improvement efforts since the RMI Report 2018, the company has produced a stronger human rights commitment statement, that explicitly aligns with the UN Guiding Principles, and a revised code of sustainable conduct, that makes explicit the alignment of the company’s environmental commitment to the mitigation hierarchy approach.
However, Teck’s results in Economic Development are below the average achieved across all 38 companies and are limited by a lack of evidence of action on a number of issues, including for example working collaboratively with sub-national governments on socio-economic development planning, and developing procurement opportunities for suppliers at the local and national level in producing countries.
In the mine-site assessment, Teck shows relatively consistent results across its five assessed mine sites (with scores ranging from 19-37%) and one Teck mine site shows one of the six stronger results among the 180 sites assessed. However, this mine site shows no relevant evidence on three issues: local procurement, community grievances and water quantity. And three other Teck mine sites show no relevant evidence on water quality.
